Frequently asked questions
Short answers about accounts, reading, uploading and supporting Kagane.
Account and sign-in
5 questionsDo I need an email address to sign up?
No. You sign up with a username and a password. You also get 10 one-time backup codes: save them, since they are how you get back in if you lose your password.
I forgot my password. How do I get back in?
Choose “Forgot password?” on the sign-in page, then enter your username, one of your backup codes and a new password. This signs you out everywhere, and that code can't be used again.
I lost my backup codes too. What now?
Send a recovery claim and tell staff things only the owner would know. A claim waits at least 3 days (7 for staff and group admins) so the owner can object, and the claim link you get is the only way to check on it.
How do I turn on two-step verification?
Set up an authenticator app such as Aegis, 2FAS or Google Authenticator under Security in Settings. Signing in with your password then also asks for its 6-digit code, or one of your backup codes.
I think someone else is using my account.
Under Security in Settings, Security activity lists sign-ins and account changes from the last 180 days, and Signed-in devices lets you sign out any of them. Then change your password and make new backup codes.
Content ratings
3 questionsWhat do Safe, 15+ and 18+ mean?
Safe suits all ages. 15+ has mature themes, violence or suggestive imagery, and 18+ is for adults only: explicit sexual content or graphic violence. Set the most mature rating you want to see under Content in Settings.
What are the Pornographic and Disturbing switches?
They sit under the rating and work on their own. Pornographic series are only ever 18+, and picking 18+ turns that switch on, so turn it off to keep 18+ without them. Disturbing covers series marked for things like gore or abuse.
Can I hide a genre, tag or series?
Yes, once you're signed in: add it to Hidden content, under Content in Settings. Hidden titles leave search, trending, similar series and Updates, or stay in place with a blurred cover if you pick that.
Reading
4 questionsHow do I change the page layout or reading direction?
Open the reader's settings and pick Single, Spread or Scroll, and right to left or left to right. Data Saver, on the Data tab, loads smaller versions of each page. Reader in Settings sets the defaults for every chapter.
Where can I see what I've read?
History lists every series you've read, newest first, with your place in each one. To keep a series off it, turn on Keep this series private under Your reading on the series page. History then shows that series only while its Private switch is on.
Can I read offline?
With supporter time you can save chapters on your device and read them without a connection, and what you read syncs when you're back online. Saved chapters are on the Downloads page, which can also export them as CBZ files.
Is there an app?
Kagane runs in your browser, and you can install it on your home screen or desktop so it opens like an app. The Install page has the steps for each browser, such as Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android, and Chrome, Edge or Brave on a computer.
Finding and following series
5 questionsHow do I find a series?
Search by title, or open Filters to narrow by format, status, genres, tags, language, source, year and more. Save a search to open it again on any device, and turn on its alert to hear when a new series matches.
A series isn't on Kagane. Can I ask for it?
Yes. Search the requests first and upvote it if someone already asked, since that counts the same. If nobody has, ask for the series or its missing chapters, and everyone who upvoted is told when it's added.
How do I keep track of a series?
On the series page, press Add to library and pick a status: Reading, Plan to read, On hold, Completed, Dropped or Rereading. That puts the series in your library, and the button then shows its status. The same panel, Your reading, saves your progress, score and favorite, and can add the series to your other lists.
How do lists work?
A list keeps series in the order you choose, and you can keep it to yourself or make it public. A public list with 3 or more series shows in Discover, unless your profile's privacy is set to Private.
How do I hear about new chapters?
Turn on Alerts on the series page. Series you favorite count too, and notification preferences add the reading statuses you pick, your whole library or groups you follow. Updates lists the new chapters from the last 90 days.
Uploading and groups
6 questionsHow do I become an uploader?
New accounts can upload 24 hours after signing up, as long as the account can comment. Every chapter is credited to a group, so create one or ask a group's admin to invite you. If you scanlate as a group and need access sooner, ask staff for upload permissions from the studio.
How do I become a trusted uploader?
Your standing on the studio dashboard lists what it takes: enough visible chapters, enough days with upload access, few upheld reports on your uploads and no active limits. Once you meet them all, Ask for a review appears there and staff decide.
What files can I upload?
ZIP, CBZ, RAR or CBR archives, chapter folders or loose images, with pages in JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or JPEG XL up to 50 MB each. MangaNerr splits a whole volume's CBZ into chapters, in your browser.
I made a mistake in a chapter I uploaded. How do I fix it?
Open the series from My series in the studio. Its manage page lets you edit numbers and credits, replace or move a chapter, and hide, withdraw or delete it. If that can't fix it, ask staff to remove the chapter.
How do I join a group?
Groups that are recruiting list the roles they need: pick one and send a request, which stays open for 30 days. A group's admin can also send you an invite or an invite link.
What do the marks next to a chapter's group mean?
A blue wand is an official release. A green tick is a trusted uploading group or trusted uploader, and a yellow tick is a trusted scanlation group or trusted scanlator.
Comments and messages
3 questionsCan people see who liked my comment?
No. Comments and forum posts show how many likes they have, never who gave them.
Can I edit a comment after posting it?
Yes, from the comment's menu, for 20 minutes after you post it.
Who can send me messages?
You choose under Messages in Settings: everyone, people you follow, people you share a group with, or nobody new. Moderators can always reach you. To stop one person, block them under Blocked people, and they can't see your profile or message you.
Reports, standing and help
4 questionsHow do I report something?
Use Report on the thing itself: the series, chapter, comment, review or profile. You need to be signed in, and you can follow each report on your reports page.
I got a warning. What happens now?
Your standing page lists every warning with its points and the date they stop counting. Points add up across warnings, and a higher total can lead to limits or a suspension.
How do I appeal a decision?
Choose Appeal next to the warning, limit, removal or suspension on your standing page, and staff keep, reduce or reverse it. If you're suspended, sign in anyway: sign-in is refused, then your standing page opens for 15 minutes so you can read why and appeal.
How do I contact staff?
Open a ticket on the Support page about your account, a blocked network, a payment, uploading or anything else that isn't a report. Most topics need no account, but uploading, new sources, groups and concerns about staff do. An account can have 3 tickets open at once. For a payment, Report a problem on its payment page fills in the details for you.
Supporting Kagane
5 questionsWhat do supporters get?
No ads or pop-ups, the premium reader, offline downloads, a profile banner and bigger avatar, a supporter badge, a name style, and request boosts each month. Your supporter page shows which are on for you and until when.
How do I become a supporter?
Pick how many months on the donations page and pay in Monero, the only way to pay. The months go on your account once the payment confirms, on top of any time you have left. If the payment screen lists swap services, one of them can turn another coin into Monero for you. Other companies run them.
How do gift codes work?
Buy months as codes to hand out, or send them straight to a username. A code is 16 letters and numbers and works once, and redeeming it adds its months on top of any supporter time you have.
Can I turn ads off without paying?
Uploads, reports that moderators act on and requests you fill earn ad-free days. When confirmed donations reach the month's goal, ads are off for everyone the next month.
Can I get a refund?
No. Monero payments can't be sent back, because Kagane can't see where they came from. If you send too much, whole months are credited and the rest counts toward this month's goal.
Your data
5 questionsCan I download my data?
Yes. Request it on Your data in Settings and you get a zip of everything Kagane holds about you. You can ask for one every 7 days, and each file is kept for 7 days.
Can I bring my list from another site?
Yes, from MyAnimeList, AniList or Mihon: open Your data in Settings and use Import. You check the matches before anything is added.
I deleted a list or reset my progress by mistake.
Open Your data in Settings and look under Undo: deleted lists, removed series and reset progress wait there while they can still be taken back, and every restore can be undone.
How do I delete my account?
Choose Delete my account under Security in Settings. You're signed out everywhere and have 14 days to change your mind by signing in and choosing Keep my account. You also decide whether your comments and reviews stay without your name or are erased.
What does Kagane keep to spot ban evasion?
A keyed hash of the network you sign in from, kept for 30 days. It isn't stored as an address and nobody is shown it as one. Administrators can use it to check whether a suspended or limited account has come back under another name, and it never acts on its own: a person always decides.
